Merry Xmas, kids!
It's been a quiet but cozy Christmas. It was the first year to have (tons and tons of) snow (by the shitload), which was surreal and sort of romantic. It snowed crazy hard this morning, but it's warming up outside so it's all starting to melt, finally. It was also the first year to not be with my fam (or with Seth's fam, or anyone's fam at all) which made me feel crazy grown-up but in an interesting independent way, not a sad, homesick way.
I'm actually pretty relieved that we didn't plan on traveling this week, because the snow has made getting to and flying out of the airport absolutely crazy. People have been sleeping there for days waiting on planes to take off after the airport ran out of its yearly allotment of de-icer for the runways after the second day of freak snowstorms this week. Anyway, I guess being too broke to travel was sort of a blessing in disguise.
Still, it was weird to be so far from home. I called my parents this morning and they were having a laid-back xmas at home, too. I'm glad they're not nuts about me coming home a lot, because it really is tough to find the money.
Anyway, Seth and I watched West Wing on DVD (LOVING IT) and ate Chinese leftovers (the poor delivery guy came over last night on xmas eve in like a foot of snow! I tipped too much, out of guilt). Then I actually cooked a pretty decent homemade christmas meal. I was really excited and had been planning it pretty much since school got out, and it was pretty easy since it was just the two of us, and I've had all week to get ready (and not stress out). I made mashed potatoes and gravy (real potatoes, gravy from a mix), yams, stuffing (from the box...I wanted to make it from scratch but it got too expensive), cranberry sauce (real, not the can), green bean casserole (which I have never ever eaten but made because it's seth's fave), and fried chicken (for real). It was crazy fun....and I took pictures.
haha, here's the chicken. One side got cooked a little longer than the other, see if you can tell...

The casserole. Seth said it was good. I didn't eat any.

Most of the finished product. I took this for my mom.

I just don't think it feels like christmas if there's not tons of food. And since school got out, all I want to do is cook. This is the first time I've ever WANTED to cook this much either, which is new (and half of it still came from the box).
Anyway, for xmas gifts this year, Seth and I are spending these Macy's gifts cards he got from work. I think we'll each get something small, then spend the rest on the apartment. My mom sent us this really great towels the other day, along with some new cooking knives and a coffee travel mug for me :D (Not to mention the coat I left behind in Shreve after Abram and Jess's wedding! yea!)

I'm so impressed with all your cooking. It looks fantastic! I've never been a fan of turkey at Thanksgiving or Christmas. I like the idea of fried chicken. :)
Same here! Not to mention that I have no CLUE how to go about preparing an entire turkey. haha.
I still can't get over your anti-casserole thing. I could eat a whole green bean casserole by myself and not feel bad. Still I'm totally jealous. My mom and I were both sick so we spent the whole day on the couch, blowing our noses. I ate microwave nachos that I didn't even want--all in honor of the baby Jesus. JK.
Your pictures totally made my day. :)
Blegh. Although this smelled really yummy, and it's only green beans and cream of mushroom soup with crunchy things on it (I think technically casseroles need at least three layers, and the crunchies count for a topping, not a layer...). I actually meant to eat some but got too full...
Sucks that you were sick! At least you were with your mom and on the couch and not, say, sleeping on the floor of an airport in a weird city. I tried to call you until I realized you don't have reception there. What did you get??
I can't believe you didn't touch the green bean casserole. That stuff is delicious. What did you get from Macy's? This was my first holiday with Abram's family and it was a blast. We played hours and hours of poker and board games, got drunk a couple of times, went bowling, went bike riding (first time since I was 8...it was embarrassing, I was white-knuckled the entire time, PLUS there were gale-force winds), ate my weight in chocolately tasty treats his mom made, and inhaled as much sea food and gumbo as I could. We ate sushi with Mikey on Christmas eve and we missed you guys. Your Christmas sounded very romantic!
That sounds SO fun! I really am jealous. It would have been nice to be in LC with yall, and lots of yummy homemade Cajun food. We should plan a trip down this summer.
