For some weird reason, I'm kind of obsessed with baby name books. I always have been -- my parents used to buy them for me when I was little. I used them to name my stuffed animals. I'm sort of obsessed with the idea of your name shaping your personality, and how people see you, and ultimately your life as a whole. (Have you ever thought about how different your life would be if your parents had named you Elvis, or Melissa, or Jane? There's nothing wrong with those names, but I think your life would have turned out a little bit different.) It's sort of like time travel theory.

Anyway, here are the top baby names for 2008:
Boys':
1. Aiden
2. Ethan
3. Noah
4. Kaden
5. Caleb
6. Braden
7. Jacob
8. Landon
9. Liam
10. Lucas

Girls':
1. Ava
2. Isabella
3. Madeline
4. Emma
5. Abigail
6. Olivia
7. Lily
8. Sophia
9. Chloe
10. Ella

And for the first time ever, I'm all, "These names are CUTE!" but then I realized it's because these babies are being born by (in part) people who are my age. And that just freaks me out.

Anyway, for the record, here are MY favorite names right now:
Boys'
  • Daschell (from Cate Blanchett)
  • Perry (like my dad)
  • Ptolemy (from Gretchen Mol)
  • Luke
  • Dean

Girls'
  • Lily
  • Ophelia
  • Kate (I used to looove this name. Now I know too many crazies named Kate. Maybe it's the name. That's my whole theory, remember?)
  • Bridget
  • Josie
  • Evangeline
  • Stella
  • Gina
I like my girl names better.

Oh, and don't steal any of these, in case I do decide to have children. Odds are that I'll probably end up using these on a dog instead. And I do have a separate list of doggy names too.

What is on your list of doggy names? If I get another cat, I'll name him Gus. So I can call him Gus-Gus. Like in Cinderella. Also, I informed Abram several years ago that whenever we have our kids, the girl will definitely be Genevieve, and we'll call her Vievie. I think I've had that picked out since I was 6 years old, but I've never changed my mind about it!

Oh, I really like that! I loved the name Genevieve when I was younger too. I wonder why? (You could also call her Vi or Vie. I would have LOVED that in high school!)

Doggie Names (for a french or english bulldog):

Grumpus
Fudge
Xander Cruz (don't let Abram steal! haha)
Basil Plimpton III

I think all the top 10 boys names...and alot of the girls are very representative of current Soap Opera character names...I used to look at baby name books too!

I know! I keep noticing that most of them are from TV shows. The fact that Aiden is number one shows how much everyone fell in love with him on SATC (I'm still mad at Carrie for dumping him).
